Research

The Owl Box Initiative will be fulfilling a range of research objectives during the project.

The Barn Owl nest boxes provided by the project and distributed across 6 farmers clusters, plus many existing Barn Owl boxes in the study area, will be monitored under licence to help understand breeding success. Additionally, a number of Barn Owls will be tracked using GPS tagging to hopefully identify their habitat preferences. Small mammal monitoring and pellet analysis will also be carried out to understand prey abundance and diet composition, to complement the GPS tagging data. We hope this research will identify mechanisms by which breeding success could be improved and provide valuable information for the development and incorporation of more Barn Owl friendly habitat within future Agri-environment Schemes, and generally across British farmland.
